Tragedy struck in Imo State on Monday evening when 15 members of the Jehovah’s Witnesses from Agwa community, Oguta Local Government Area, lost their lives in a fatal road crash at Awomama Bridge.

The victims were said to be returning from their annual religious convention held in Uli, Anambra State, when their bus collided with a trailer driving against traffic. The accident, which occurred around 6:45 p.m., left all passengers dead on the spot, plunging the community into deep mourning.

Eyewitnesses recounted that the trailer’s reckless driving gave the bus driver little chance to avoid impact. The remains of the victims have since been deposited at a nearby morgue.

Confirming the incident, the Chairman of Oguta Local Government Area, Ifeanyi Nnani, described the crash as a devastating loss to the people of Agwa. Speaking through his aide, Orum Desmond, he expressed shock and sorrow at the scale of the tragedy.

“Oguta Local Government Area has once again witnessed another dark moment, very tragic and sorrowful. These incidents remind us of the intense pain that has suddenly taken away the lives of our people,” Nnani said, while extending condolences to the bereaved families.

The accident has reignited concerns over road safety and law enforcement in Nigeria, particularly the dangers of heavy-duty vehicles driving against traffic. For many in Agwa, the loss of 15 community members in a single day is a blow too heavy to bear.
