25 Dead In Niger State Boat Accident

By Doubra Diafa
Niger State, Nigeria At least 25 people are feared dead after a tragic boat accident on Monday near Gumu village in Gurara Local Government Area of Niger State. The wooden vessel, carrying over 40 passengers, was reportedly en route to the Gawu Babangida weekly market when it capsized mid-river.
Reports states that the overloaded boat encountered strong currents and lost balance shortly after departing the riverbank. Eyewitnesses report that many of the passengers were women and children. So far, 14 bodies have been recovered, while a frantic search continues for others still missing.
The Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA) confirmed the incident and blamed a combination of poor safety practices, overloading, and lack of life jackets. Rescue operations were hampered by insecurity in the area, as bandit activity has made many river routes dangerous and under-patrolled.
Governor Mohammed Umar Bago expressed condolences to the bereaved families and directed an immediate investigation. He also promised the provision of safer, government-regulated transport alternatives for riverine communities.
Authorities are urging river transport operators to adhere strictly to safety regulations as rescue and recovery efforts continue.
