Over 135 Students Sponsored Abroad Flee – TETFUND

By Sola Omoniyi, Lagos
Echono, the Executive Secretary of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund, TETFUND, has stated that over 135 students sponsored abroad by the fund have absconded.
He stated this on Tuesday, July 18, 2023, when he appeared before the House of Representatives committee investigating the alleged mismanagement of over N2 trillion tertiary education tax by TETFUND.
Echono revealed that the students sent abroad to study refused to return to Nigeria after completing their programmes.
He maintained that even though the scholarship requires that the students will come back but failed to return and their guarantor usually suffers undue hardship.
However, he stated that TETFUND is working with stakeholders for stringent and effective measures to be used against those who refuse to return to the country for Nigerians to benefit from their expertise.
He however added that TETFUND was not against those who are seeking greener pastures, but they should do so on their own and stop acting on TETFUND intelligence.
