Welders Union Raises Alarm Over Expatriates Taking Local Jobs

The National Union of Nigeria Welders (NUNIWE) has expressed concern over the growing influx of expatriate workers in the country’s welding and fabrication sector, warning that local professionals are increasingly being sidelined. In a statement issued on Sunday, the union claimed that many companies now prefer to hire foreign workers for jobs Nigerian welders are fully qualified to handle.

According to NUNIWE, the trend is worsening unemployment and undermining skill development among local artisans. The union called on the Federal Government to enforce labour laws that prioritise Nigerian workers and ensure fair opportunities for homegrown talent. It also urged vocational training agencies to step up certification programmes to match global standards, thereby removing any justification for sidelining local experts.
