The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to immediately declare a state of emergency in Katsina and Zamfara states, following the worsening security crisis in the region.

The opposition party said the escalating attacks by bandits and other criminal groups have pushed both states to the brink of collapse, with countless lives lost, communities displaced, and economic activities paralyzed.

According to the ADC, residents of the two states live under constant fear, with schools shut down, farmers unable to access their lands, and highways increasingly unsafe. The party stressed that the situation has gone beyond routine security responses and requires extraordinary intervention from the federal government.

“The killings, kidnappings, and destruction in Katsina and Zamfara have reached an alarming level. Normal security measures have failed, and declaring a state of emergency is the only way to restore order and protect innocent citizens,” the party stated.

The ADC further urged President Tinubu to prioritize the safety of Nigerians above political considerations. It argued that taking decisive action would not only save lives but also demonstrate that the federal government has the political will to end insecurity in the North-West.

Civil society groups and community leaders in the affected states have also echoed similar concerns, warning that without urgent intervention, the crisis could spread further and destabilize neighboring regions.
