REJOINDER: SETTING THE RECORD STRAIGHT ON THE NUT’S EFFORTS

The recent publication attacking the leadership of Comrade Dalhatu Ibrahim, Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) in Kaduna State, is not only misleading but also a calculated attempt to discredit the genuine efforts of a committed leader. As someone conversant with the realities on ground, I find it necessary to put the facts in proper perspective.
Contrary to allegations of betrayal and incompetence, the leadership of the NUT under Comrade Ibrahim has been at the forefront of negotiations to secure the ₦72,000 minimum wage for teachers in Kaduna State. The chairman has consistently engaged the government, pressing for teachers’ rights and welfare.
It must be emphasised that the implementation of a new minimum wage is a complex process that requires planning, dialogue, and coordination. The NUT leadership has remained steadfast in addressing the challenges that accompany this process, ensuring that the interest of teachers is never compromised.
The insinuation that the union has been insincere or has “sold out” teachers is unfair and unfounded. On the contrary, the union has worked tirelessly to secure entitlements and has shown deep understanding of the unique challenges confronting teachers in the state.
Comrade Ibrahim has been a vocal advocate for teachers, strengthening collaboration with the Kaduna State Government under His Excellency, Senator Uba Sani, a workers-friendly governor who has consistently demonstrated goodwill towards teachers.
Calls for teachers to abandon the union or embark on disruptive protests are ill-advised and counterproductive. What is required at this point is unity, not division.
*A CALL TO UNITY AND SUPPORT*
Teachers in Kaduna State are urged to stand firmly behind their union. The leadership under Comrade Ibrahim has demonstrated commitment and capacity to champion teachers’ welfare. With collective support, the union can achieve even greater progress.
*Why unity matters:*
* *Collective bargaining:* A united membership gives the NUT stronger leverage in negotiations.
* *Better outcomes:* Cooperation leads to improved working conditions, salaries, and benefits.
* *Stronger union:* A supportive membership strengthens the union’s ability to defend teachers’ rights.
*Call to action for teachers:*
* Rally behind the NUT leadership in ongoing negotiations.
* Offer the necessary cooperation to achieve shared goals.
* Remain united to secure lasting gains for the teaching profession.
CONCLUSION
The leadership of the NUT in Kaduna State has been working diligently to ensure that teachers receive their entitlements, including the minimum wage. The allegations of betrayal and incompetence are baseless and should be disregarded. Teachers are encouraged to remain united, support their union, and trust in the commitment of both the NUT leadership and the Kaduna State Government to make the welfare of teachers a top priority.
Yours in Struggle,
Comrade Haruna Ahmed (a.k.a. Last Born)
Treasurer, NUT Birnin Gwari Branch
