Nigerian Man Sparks Debate On Polygamy, Urges Men To Consider More Than Finances

A Nigerian man, who identifies himself as Fastest Ponmo, the village boy, has sparked conversation after sharing his thoughts on polygamy and the responsibilities that come with it.

According to him, a Muslim friend recently approached him to highlight the benefits of marrying a second wife. The friend argued that as men grow older, their only wife may spend much of her time caring for grandchildren, leaving them without adequate support at home.

He reminded him that Islam permits men to marry up to four wives.

Responding, Fastest Ponmo acknowledged that while Islam allows men to have multiple wives, the condition remains that one must be truly capable, and capability, he stressed, extends far beyond financial strength.

“Some men believe that once they have money, they can start adding wives. But am I sexually capable of having more than one wife? Have I satisfied my first wife before thinking of another? Have I given her the time and attention she needs?” he asked.

He revealed that due to frequent travels, he sometimes sees his wife only four times a week, and when away for months, intimacy may not happen at all. In such circumstances, he questioned the fairness of adding another wife.

“Let us pity our wives. Whatever wrong they might have done, once you remember what they endured in labour to bring your children into the world, you should be able to forgive them, unless you are a devil,” he said.

He clarified that he is not against polygamy but urged men to approach it with sincerity and responsibility. “Capability isn’t just about money. Having one wife or more does not guarantee a happy old age. Our future is in God’s hands,” he concluded.
