Healthcare Experts Urge Government to Address Mass Exodus of Doctors

By Diafa Doubra,
Nigeria’s healthcare sector is facing a growing crisis as thousands of doctors continue to leave the country in search of better opportunities abroad. Experts have warned that unless urgent steps are taken, the trend could cripple the already struggling health system.
Stakeholders in the industry say poor working conditions, inadequate infrastructure, insecurity, and low remuneration are among the major factors pushing medical professionals out of the country. According to them, the migration of doctors, commonly referred to as “japa,” has left many hospitals understaffed and patients with limited access to quality care.
Health policy analysts are urging the federal government to implement policies that will not only improve doctors’ welfare but also provide a conducive environment for medical practice. Suggestions include better funding for hospitals, improved equipment, prompt payment of salaries, and targeted incentives to encourage specialists to remain in the country.
They caution that without immediate intervention, Nigeria may face an acute shortage of medical practitioners, which could worsen healthcare delivery and increase the risk of avoidable deaths.
