By Micheal Chukwuebuka
THE Federal Government has taken charge of rescue operations following the collapse of a mine pit in Kadauri Village, Maru Local Government Area of Zamfara State.
According to a statement from the Ministry of Solid Minerals Development, the government deployed Federal Mines Officers in the state to coordinate ongoing rescue efforts after the tragic incident, which was reportedly triggered by heavy rainfall and worsened by the illegal activities of unlicensed miners.
Fifteen mine workers were trapped in the collapse. Thirteen bodies have so far been recovered, with no survivors found. Efforts are continuing to locate the remaining two miners still trapped beneath the rubble.
Reacting to the incident, the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr Dele Alake, described the loss of lives as both avoidable and deeply regrettable. He noted that relevant departments within the ministry have been mobilised to support rescue efforts and investigate the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
