Armed Robbers Kill ARISE News Anchor In Abuja

The ARISE News Channel has announced the tragic death of one of its journalists, Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu, who was killed during an armed robbery incident at her residence in the Katampe area of Abuja in the early hours of Monday, 29 September 2025.

In a statement released by the management of ARISE News, the organisation expressed profound grief over the loss of their beloved colleague, describing Somtochukwu—fondly called Sommie—as a cherished member of the team and a vibrant voice who deeply connected with viewers across Nigeria and beyond.

Born on 26 December 1995, Sommie was a News Anchor, Reporter, and Producer at ARISE News. She was also a lawyer, remembered for her professionalism, passion, and supportive nature both on and off the screen.

“Sommie tragically passed away following an armed robbery incident in her residence in Katampe area of Abuja that is being investigated by the Nigeria Police,” the statement read.

“She was not only a cherished member of the ARISE News family but also a vibrant voice that engaged and connected with our viewers. Beyond the airwaves, Sommie was a lawyer who was a professional and supportive colleague and a friend to many.”

The management of ARISE News extended their deepest condolences to Sommie’s parents, siblings, extended family, friends, and loved ones, describing her death as a painful loss that has left the organisation in shock.

“Sommie’s voice is now silent, but her spirit, passion and legacy will endure as part of our collective memory. We remain in shock and call for a speedy investigation, apprehension and prosecution of the culprits,” the statement added.

The Nigeria Police have commenced investigations into the incident with assurances to bring the perpetrators to justice.

Somtochukwu Maduagwu was 29 years old. Her death has sparked widespread grief within the media community and among viewers who admired her work and on-air presence.

Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by her family in due course.
