Four worshippers lost their lives after a gunman rammed his vehicle into a Mormon church in Michigan, opened fire on the congregation with an assault rifle, and then set the building ablaze, according to police reports.

Authorities in the northern US state identified the suspect as 40-year-old Thomas Jacob Sanford, who was shot dead in a gunfight with law enforcement officers in the church car park, just minutes after the first emergency call was received.

Speaking at a press conference on Sunday, Grand Blanc Police Chief William Renye confirmed that two additional bodies were recovered from the debris of the burned church, bringing the death toll to four. Search and recovery efforts are still ongoing.

Chief Renye also stated that eight people were injured in the attack, with one victim reported to be in critical condition.

The motive for the attack remains unclear as investigations continue.
