Tension in Katsina as Bandit Leader Attends Peace Dialogue Armed with RPGs and AK-47s

By Diafa Doubra,
Tension has gripped residents of Katsina State following reports that a notorious bandit leader attended a peace meeting with government officials while heavily armed with rocket-propelled grenades (RPGs) and AK-47 rifles.
According to eyewitnesses, the shocking incident occurred during a peace dialogue organized to broker a truce between local communities and the armed groups terrorizing parts of the state. The bandit leader, known for leading violent raids across several villages, reportedly arrived at the venue flanked by dozens of gunmen, sparking fear among participants.
Sources revealed that security operatives at the scene maintained restraint to avoid confrontation, as the dialogue was meant to promote peace. However, the incident has raised serious questions about the effectiveness of ongoing peace initiatives and the government’s strategy in tackling insecurity in the North-West.
Many residents and civil society groups have since condemned the development, describing it as a clear sign that armed groups continue to wield power and influence in the region, despite government assurances of restoring peace.
