The Senate has confirmed Professor Joash Amupitan as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Amupitan, a 58-year-old law professor, was approved on Thursday following a rigorous screening session that lasted over two hours. During the exercise, senators grilled him on plans to restore public confidence in Nigeria’s electoral system and drive key institutional reforms.

His appointment, earlier nominated by President Bola Tinubu and endorsed by the National Council of State last week, makes him the sixth substantive head of the commission.

Amupitan succeeds Professor Mahmood Yakubu, who recently completed his tenure as INEC Chairman.
