By Diafa Doubra,
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has officially sworn in Mr. Etekamba Amupitan as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), replacing Prof. Mahmood Yakubu whose tenure recently ended. The swearing-in ceremony, which took place at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, was attended by top government officials, including the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, and the Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila.
In his brief remarks, President Tinubu charged Amupitan to uphold the integrity and independence of the electoral body, emphasizing that Nigerians deserve elections that reflect their true choices. He urged the new INEC boss to ensure transparency, efficiency and fairness in all future polls, noting that the credibility of the nation’s democracy depends largely on the commission’s performance.
Amupitan, in his response, expressed gratitude for the confidence reposed in him and pledged to carry out his duties with honesty and diligence. He assured Nigerians that under his leadership, INEC would leverage technology and reforms to strengthen electoral processes and rebuild public trust.
