Mob Kills Chief Imam in Kwara Over Alleged Witchcraft Accusation
By Diafa Doubra,
Tragedy struck in Sokupkpan community, Edu Local Government Area of Kwara State, after residents allegedly beat the Chief Imam of the area, Alhaji Abdulahi Audu, to death over claims that he was responsible for a man’s deteriorating health through spiritual means.
According to eyewitnesses, trouble began when a local resident accused the cleric of appearing in his dreams and attacking him spiritually. The accusations quickly spread through the community, sparking anger and suspicion among some villagers.
Despite appeals from a few elders to calm the situation, a mob reportedly stormed the Imam’s house, dragged him out, and beat him mercilessly until he died. The incident threw the peaceful community into chaos, forcing many residents to flee for safety.
The Kwara State Police Command confirmed the killing, describing it as a barbaric act of jungle justice. Police spokesperson, DSP Ejire Adetoun, said three suspects have been arrested in connection with the lynching, while investigations are ongoing to apprehend others involved.
Authorities have urged residents to shun superstition and take disputes or suspicions to law enforcement agencies instead of resorting to violence.
