CAF Slams Sanctions on Senegal and Morocco Following AFCON Final Chaos
By Micheal Chukwuebuka,
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has imposed severe penalties on the Senegalese Football Federation (FSF), the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF), and several players and officials, following disturbances at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final in Rabat.
In a statement released on its official website on Wednesday evening, CAF announced the sanctions, citing breaches of the CAF Disciplinary Code, including violations of fair play, loyalty, and integrity principles during and after the final.
Senegal manager Pape Bouna Thiaw received a five-match suspension and a $100,000 fine for unsporting conduct. Players Iliman Cheikh, Baroy Ndiaye and Ismaila Sarr were suspended for two matches each for unsporting behaviour towards match officials.
The FSF was fined $300,000 for supporter misconduct and an additional $300,000 for unsporting conduct by players and staff. A further $15,000 fine was imposed for five cautions received by Senegalese players.
Morocco’s Achraf Hakimi was suspended for two matches, while Ismaël Saibari received a three-match ban and a $100,000 fine. The FRMF was fined $200,000 for stadium ball boys’ behaviour and $100,000 for players and staff invading the VAR area. A $15,000 fine was also imposed for laser pointer use by supporters.
The AFCON final descended into chaos after Senegal had a goal disallowed, and Morocco were awarded a late penalty. Senegal’s coach led a walk-off protest, sparking chaotic scenes. Morocco’s penalty was saved, and Senegal eventually won in extra time.
CAF’s President and FIFA President Gianni Infantino condemned the conduct. The FRMF’s protest was rejected, confirming Senegal as champions.
