Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao are set to renew one of boxing’s most iconic rivalries, with a long-awaited rematch scheduled for September at the Sphere in Las Vegas, according to an announcement by Netflix.

The bout, which will take place on 19 September, marks a historic return to the ring for two of the sport’s most celebrated figures and comes more than a decade after their first encounter in 2015. That initial fight, billed as the “Fight of the Century”, generated unprecedented global attention and remains the highest-grossing contest in boxing history, despite criticism over its cautious pace.

Both fighters are now in their late forties, adding a compelling narrative to the rematch. Mayweather, undefeated throughout his professional career, recently confirmed that he is coming out of retirement, fuelling speculation that negotiations for a second showdown were already at an advanced stage. Pacquiao, a former eight-division world champion and ex-senator in the Philippines, has also been linked with a return to elite competition after several exhibition bouts in recent years.

Netflix confirmed on Monday that the fight will be broadcast live on its platform, further underlining the company’s growing ambition in the live sports market. Traditionally focused on films and scripted series, the streaming giant has increasingly ventured into high-profile, one-off sporting events, aiming to attract global audiences beyond conventional boxing broadcasters.

The choice of the Sphere as the venue is expected to add a unique spectacle to the event. The state-of-the-art arena, renowned for its immersive visuals and advanced technology, is likely to transform the rematch into not just a boxing contest, but a major entertainment event.

While questions remain about how age may affect both fighters’ performances, anticipation is already building among fans worldwide. Promoters believe the rematch will once again dominate global sporting headlines, blending nostalgia, legacy, and modern spectacle in what could be one of boxing’s most talked-about events of the decade.
