BREAKING: Ijaw, Urhobo Demonstrators Occupy INEC Office in Delta, Insist on Warri Delineation Report Implementation
By Joseph Bienbo
Ijaw and Urhobo protesters on Tuesday besieged the INEC headquarters in Delta State, demanding that the commission immediately implement its final report on the Supreme Court-ordered fresh delineation of Warri Federal Constituency. The demonstrators, who gathered at the Asaba office, said the delay in putting the May 20 report into effect threatens the credibility of the electoral process ahead of 2027.
The groups argued that INEC had already presented its decision to stakeholders, including the creation of 20 new wards and two additional state constituencies for Warri North and Warri South West LGAs. They accused presidency and other external forces of stalling implementation and warned that any alteration of the report would undermine the rule of law and worsen tensions in the area.
Carrying placards and chanting solidarity songs, the protesters called on INEC to direct political parties to begin primaries for the newly created constituencies without further delay. They stressed that the Ijaw and Urhobo communities are ready to participate in the 2027 elections based on the approved delineation and urged the commission to act before the election timetable lapses.
