Delta Police Reaffirms Commitment to Gender-Based Violence Prevention, Trains Divisional Police Officers

The Delta State Police Command has reiterated its commitment to combating Gender-Based Violence (GBV) through sustained capacity building and professional training of its officers across divisions in the state.

This reaffirmation was made by the Commissioner of Police, CP Yemi John Oyeniyi, psc, during a specialised command training programme organised for Divisional Police Officers (DPOs) on GBV prevention strategies. The training was convened by the CLEEN Foundation in collaboration with the Nigeria Police Force and had in attendance senior police officers, including CP Aina Adesola, psc, Commissioner of Police, Department of Training, Force Headquarters, Abuja.

In his remarks, CP Oyeniyi expressed appreciation to the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, psc(+), NPM, for what he described as his unwavering commitment to institutional reforms, professionalism, and continuous capacity development within the Force. He noted that the initiative aligns with the IGP’s vision of a modern, people-centred, and service-driven police institution capable of addressing evolving security and social challenges.

The Police Commissioner described gender-based violence as a grave violation of human rights and a significant threat to societal stability and development. He emphasized the need for Divisional Police Officers to adopt a victim-centred approach in handling GBV-related cases, while ensuring professionalism, empathy, diligence, and strict adherence to legal and procedural frameworks.

He further urged participants to apply the knowledge gained from the training to improve investigations, strengthen survivor support systems, and enhance public trust in policing across the state.

CP Oyeniyi also commended the CLEEN Foundation for its sustained partnership with the Nigeria Police Force in promoting human rights, accountability, and professional policing standards.

Speaking at the event, CP Aina Adesola highlighted the importance of continuous learning and specialised training in equipping officers with the required skills to respond effectively to emerging security challenges, particularly cases of gender-based violence.

The training sessions focused on GBV prevention strategies, survivor-centred policing, best investigative practices, and inter-agency collaboration aimed at improving institutional response to GBV cases across Delta State.

The Delta State Police Command reaffirmed its resolve to protect vulnerable persons, support survivors of abuse, and ensure that perpetrators of gender-based violence are diligently investigated and brought to justice.
