Niger Delta Ex-Agitators’ Group Backs Atiku/Amaechi Ticket, Urges Rejection of Tinubu Ahead of 2027

A coalition identifying itself as the umbrella body for ex-agitators in the Niger Delta has endorsed a proposed presidential ticket of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi, describing the alliance as the most viable option to address Nigeria’s economic and security challenges ahead of the 2027 general elections.

In a statement signed by Gen. Ojuemi Oweikeme, Gen. Markson Isere (Secretary), and Comrade Daniel Ezekiel Perela (Spokesperson), the group expressed dissatisfaction with the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, alleging that Nigerians are grappling with worsening economic hardship, rising insecurity and declining living standards.

The group claimed that many families can no longer afford basic necessities, while incidents of kidnapping and violent crime have continued to increase across the country. It argued that the Tinubu administration’s economic policies have failed to deliver meaningful relief to ordinary citizens, alleging that government borrowing has risen without corresponding improvements in infrastructure or public welfare.

The ex-agitators’ body also referenced recent reports by international financial institutions, claiming they reflect worsening poverty levels and raising concerns over public spending and accountability. It further criticised the government’s handling of security, alleging that many parts of the country remain unsafe for residents and travellers.

According to the group, a joint Atiku Abubakar–Rotimi Amaechi presidential ticket would offer experienced leadership capable of restoring economic growth and improving governance.

It cited Atiku Abubakar’s role as head of the National Economic Council during his tenure as Vice President, crediting him with supporting the liberalisation of Nigeria’s telecommunications sector, which it said expanded access to mobile communication and created employment opportunities.

The group also praised Amaechi’s tenure as Minister of Transportation, highlighting the completion of the Warri–Itakpe railway line and other rail projects, which it said improved transportation and boosted economic activities.

Calling on the people of the Niger Delta to look beyond political affiliations, the group urged citizens to reject what it described as attempts by “self-serving individuals” to mobilise support for President Tinubu ahead of the next general election.

The statement concluded with an appeal for Nigerians to support leaders whom the group believes possess the experience and capacity to address the country’s economic and security challenges.
