Delta CP Orders Intensified Intelligence Gathering, Forest Patrols to Strengthen State Security

The Commissioner of Police, Yemi Oyeniyi, has directed Divisional Police Officers (DPOs), patrol and guard officers, vigilante groups, forest guards, and other recognised community security outfits across Delta State to intensify intelligence gathering and sustain coordinated patrols in forests, rural communities, and critical access routes to enhance security across the state.

The directive was issued during a strategic security meeting held on Wednesday, July 15, 2026, at the Delta State Police Command Headquarters, where the police boss met with security stakeholders alongside the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations and members of the Command Management Team.

Addressing participants, CP Oyeniyi commended vigilante groups and other community-based security outfits for their continued support in maintaining peace and security. He, however, emphasised that all operations must be carried out strictly within the confines of the law and in close collaboration with the police.

The Commissioner ordered that the activities of all recognised local security outfits be coordinated under the supervision of their respective Divisional Police Officers, stressing that effective community policing depends on collaboration, regular patrols, and prompt intelligence sharing.

He also instructed security operatives to intensify surveillance and patrols across forests, waterways, highways, railway corridors, bush paths, and other vulnerable access routes often exploited by criminal elements.

CP Oyeniyi warned against unlawful detention, torture, dehumanising treatment, and the misuse of vigilante groups to settle personal grievances. He directed that all suspects arrested by any security outfit must be immediately handed over to the nearest police station for proper investigation and prosecution.

The police commissioner further urged leaders of vigilante and community security groups to enforce discipline within their ranks by identifying and removing criminal or errant members while ensuring that no individual acting outside the law is protected.

Reaffirming the Delta State Police Command’s commitment to strengthening grassroots security, CP Oyeniyi disclosed that similar engagements would be replicated across the state’s local government areas to deepen coordination, improve intelligence sharing, and enhance collective efforts in combating crime.
