NIMET, NCCC Strengthen Partnership to Combat Climate Change

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) and the National Council on Climate Change (NCCC) are strengthening collaboration to tackle the growing threats of climate change through improved climate data, early warning systems, and resilience-building initiatives.

The meeting between Director General of NiMet, Prof. Charles Anosike, and Dr. Tenioye Majekodunmi of the National Council on Climate Change highlighted the urgent need for coordinated action in addressing rising climate challenges, including erratic rainfall, flooding, prolonged droughts, and their impact on agriculture, water resources, and infrastructure.

Prof. Charles Anosike emphasized that NiMet remains the custodian of Nigeria’s long-term meteorological records, which provide critical baseline data for climate trend analysis, risk assessments, and the development of reliable climate projections.

He called for stronger collaboration in co-developing climate projections, improving early warning systems, harmonizing climate data protocols, and carrying out joint research to support evidence-based policy formulation.

The Two Institutions also agreed to formalize their partnership through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), covering cooperation in climate services, data management, research, capacity development, early warning systems, and other areas of mutual interest.

The renewed partnership comes as Nigeria continues to face increasing climate-related disasters that threaten lives, livelihoods, and the environment.
