Delta Police Arrest Nine in Crackdown on Illegal Roadblocks, Highway Extortion

The Delta State Police Command has intensified its crackdown on illegal roadblocks and unauthorized revenue collection across major highways in the state, reaffirming its commitment to restoring safety and free movement for motorists.

The operation, which is in compliance with the Federal Government’s directive to eliminate extortion and criminal activities on Nigerian roads, commenced on Friday, July 24, targeting notorious locations where illegal toll collection and roadblocks have hindered traffic and exposed road users to harassment.

According to a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, Bright Edafe, operatives arrested nine suspects during the enforcement exercise at strategic locations, including the Head Bridge axis on the Delta–Anambra boundary and the Benin–Asaba Expressway near Agbor.

The Command disclosed that all the suspects are currently in police custody and will be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.

Reiterating its resolve to restore sanity on the state’s highways, the police assured residents that similar enforcement operations would be extended to other parts of Delta State to eradicate illegal checkpoints and extortion of motorists.

The Command also urged members of the public to cooperate with law enforcement officers by providing useful information that will aid efforts to keep the highways safe and free from criminal activities.
