Anaughe Urges Probe, Prosecution of Suspects Over Alleged Attacks on Omo-Agege Supporters

Warri, Delta State — Godwin Anaughe, Special Adviser on Strategy and Communications to the Delta Central Senatorial Candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, has called on security and relevant government agencies to urgently investigate and prosecute anyone found culpable in the alleged attacks on Omo-Agege and his supporters.

Anaughe made the call in a statement issued to journalists in Warri, while responding to comments reportedly made by the Delta State Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, Charles Ehiedu Aniagwu, during an interview on Arise News.

According to Anaughe, the alleged incidents involved attacks on political supporters in Usiefrun, Ughelli South Local Government Area, and the destruction of a campaign venue in Uvwie Local Government Area.

He alleged that armed men attacked members of Omo-Agege’s political team during a ward-to-ward engagement in Usiefrun on August 13, leaving six people injured, some of whom reportedly required hospital treatment.

Anaughe further alleged that on August 21, more than 50 armed men stormed and destroyed a venue prepared for an Omo-Agege campaign meeting in Uvwie.

He specifically named one Emmanuel Erube as an alleged participant and called for an investigation into him and anyone else suspected of involvement.

“If the evidence points to criminal responsibility, those responsible should be prosecuted,” Anaughe said, adding that authorities should also investigate alleged threats against Omo-Agege and determine whether anyone directed, financed or facilitated the attacks.

He maintained that the allegations should not be dismissed as ordinary political disagreement, stressing that there were allegedly injured persons, a damaged venue, witnesses and a named suspect.

Anaughe also rejected Aniagwu’s reported criticism that Omo-Agege “has no message,” arguing that the senator had been engaging voters and supporters across Delta Central through ward-to-ward meetings.

He said political campaigns should be based on ideas, engagement and allowing voters to make their choices freely, rather than intimidation or violence.

The NDC chieftain further challenged the Delta State Government to provide explanations concerning the management of public funds, particularly what he described as more than ₦4 trillion reportedly received by the state under Governor Sheriff Oborevwori.

According to him, questions over public finances and alleged political violence should not be deflected by references to government projects or campaign messaging.

He also dismissed the argument that Omo-Agege and Governor Oborevwori are contesting different political offices, saying the central issue was the alleged threat to the senator’s safety and the security of his supporters.

Anaughe alleged that questions remained unanswered regarding an alleged directive to eliminate Omo-Agege and called for a transparent investigation to establish the facts and identify anyone responsible.

He also referenced the Emevor-Orogun Road, noting that the project had been promised by successive administrations in Delta Central. While acknowledging the importance of infrastructure development, he argued that road projects should not be used to divert attention from allegations of political violence.

“Development and security aren’t a trade-off,” he said, insisting that Deltans should not be forced to choose between infrastructure and security.

Anaughe accused the state government of attempting to portray Delta as peaceful despite the alleged attacks, arguing that political participation should not expose citizens to intimidation or violence.

He further claimed that Aniagwu did not directly deny the alleged attacks but instead shifted the discussion toward Omo-Agege’s political message.

“We’re not interested in a political mud fight, and we won’t be talked out of demanding accountability,” Anaughe said.

He called on security agencies to investigate the incidents impartially and make their findings public, stressing that Deltans have the right to participate in political activities without fear.

Omo-Agege had earlier alleged that suspected armed thugs linked to the state government attacked his supporters and destroyed his campaign venue in Effurun, Uvwie Local Government Area.

He had also raised concerns over alleged threats to his life and called on the Federal Government and security agencies to hold Governor Oborevwori responsible should anything happen to him, his family or supporters.

The allegations remain claims by the Omo-Agege camp, and any determination of criminal responsibility would depend on the outcome of investigations by the appropriate authorities.
