IWRPF Demands Severe Punishment for Child Sexual Abuse, Trafficking

The Ijaw Women Rights’ Protection Forum (IWRPF) has condemned the sexual abuse, exploitation and trafficking of children, calling on the Federal Government, state governments, security agencies and the judiciary to impose the strongest lawful penalties on perpetrators.

In a statement, the organisation stressed that child sexual abuse must not be treated as an ordinary crime, irrespective of the perpetrator’s relationship with the victim. It maintained that parents, guardians, relatives, foster parents and other individuals found guilty of abusing children must be held accountable under the law.

The IWRPF also demanded harsh punishment for individuals involved in the trafficking, sale and exploitation of children for financial or personal gain. It warned that no familial or social relationship should be used as a shield to protect offenders from justice.

The women’s rights group called for swift investigations, diligent prosecution and severe punishment for convicted perpetrators, adding that where Nigerian law provides for the death penalty for a specific offence, it supports its application after due process and conviction.

The organisation further urged authorities to ensure justice for every child who has suffered sexual abuse or trafficking, while encouraging survivors to speak out and assuring them that their voices matter and justice remains possible.

“Enough is enough. Protect our children. Punish the perpetrators. Let justice speak for the innocent,” the IWRPF declared.
