A prominent civil society activist, Comrade Ezekiel Daniel, has strongly condemned the proposed implementation of a new tax law, describing it as a “dangerous assault on democracy” and the economic wellbeing of Nigerians. The law, scheduled to take effect in January, has sparked concerns of executive overreach and alteration of legislative instruments.

According to Ezekiel, there is a discrepancy between the version of the tax legislation passed by the National Assembly and the framework the executive arm intends to enforce. “Enforcing a law that materially differs from what was legislatively approved amounts to deception and, in legal terms, constitutes forgery,” he stated.

The activist warned that such actions signal a slide toward authoritarian rule under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration. “When laws are altered outside parliamentary approval and imposed on the people, democracy is already under threat,” Ezekiel said.

Ezekiel called on security and investigative agencies to probe the alleged alteration of the tax law, insisting that those responsible be identified and prosecuted. He described the policy as “economic aggression” and “a broad robbery of citizens,” exacerbating poverty and hardship.

The activist urged Nigerians to collectively resist the “institutionalised exploitation” and defend democracy and economic dignity. “The survival of our democracy depends on the courage of the people to speak out,” Ezekiel said.
