The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has revealed shocking findings following its probe into the runway incursion involving an Air Peace Boeing 737 aircraft in Port Harcourt.

According to the agency, toxicology tests conducted on some members of the flight crew showed traces of alcohol and cannabis, raising serious safety concerns. The NSIB explained that its investigators were alarmed by the discovery, stressing that crew impairment poses grave risks to both passengers and aircraft operations.

The incident, which occurred during a landing procedure, had initially been reported as a minor runway safety breach. However, subsequent investigations uncovered deeper issues, including violations of standard safety protocols.

NSIB has since recommended urgent measures to the airline and aviation regulators, including stricter crew screening, random drug and alcohol testing, and stronger enforcement of safety standards across Nigeria’s aviation sector.

The agency reassured the public of its commitment to ensuring air travel safety, while warning that negligence or misconduct by flight crew would not be tolerated.
