Residents of Ibadan were thrown into mourning yesterday after Ojo Peter, a local journalist, was shot dead in a daylight robbery along the Molete–Oke Ado axis of the city.

According to eyewitnesses, the tragic incident occurred when suspected armed robbers intercepted a commercial tricycle carrying passengers, including the journalist. In the chaos, the assailants reportedly opened fire, fatally hitting Ojo before fleeing the scene with valuables.

Ojo, who was well known in Ibadan’s media circles for his passionate reporting on community issues, was rushed to a nearby hospital but was confirmed dead on arrival. His untimely death has sparked outrage among colleagues, civil society groups, and residents who are calling for swift justice.

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Oyo State Council, condemned the killing, describing it as “a direct attack on press freedom and the safety of journalists in Nigeria.” The union also urged security agencies to intensify efforts in tackling rising cases of violent crime in the state.

Residents expressed frustration at the growing insecurity in Ibadan, with some accusing the authorities of neglecting their duty to protect lives and property. One resident told reporters:

“It’s heartbreaking that armed robbers can strike in broad daylight, take a life, and walk away as if nothing happened. We no longer feel safe in our own city.”

The Oyo State Police Command confirmed the incident, assuring that an investigation had begun and pledging to track down those responsible.

Ojo’s colleagues describe him as a hardworking journalist who believed strongly in giving a voice to the voiceless. His death, they say, is not only a personal loss to the media community but also a blow to the fight for accountability and transparency in society.

As Ibadan reels from the tragedy, questions are being raised once again about Nigeria’s worsening security situation and the dangers faced daily by journalists in the line of duty.
