Former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has dismissed claims of insecurity in Nigeria, stating that he feels “perfectly safe” during his visit to the country.

Johnson made the comment on Thursday at the Imo State Economic Summit 2025, held in Owerri, the state capital.

“When I decided to come to Owerri, I read some things, and there were people saying, ‘There may be some security problems in Nigeria.’ Have you heard that?” he said. “And I said, ‘Well, I am going to go anyway.’”

Addressing participants at the summit, he added:
“Do you feel safe here today in this conference? Yes, we all feel safe. And I feel perfectly safe. Thank you, Governor, for what you are doing.”

Johnson also praised Governor Hope Uzodimma for his efforts to deliver 24-hour electricity across Imo State, describing the initiative as essential for economic growth.

He further highlighted the importance of artificial intelligence in driving development, noting that AI remains “the future” and will play a significant role in the state’s progress.
