‎In a move aimed at boosting local industry and reducing dependence on federal allocations, Governor Babagana Umara Zulum of Borno State announced on Thursday that the state has begun exporting plastic products to neighboring countries.

‎Speaking during an inspection of the Borno Plastic Factory in the newly developed Maiduguri Industrial Area, Zulum described the initiative as a strategic step toward economic self-sufficiency.

‎“I am happy to note that people from Borno State will no longer procure plastic materials from elsewhere. These products have already been sold to neighboring countries and other Nigerian states. We will continue to invest in our industries, so that in the near future, the Borno State Government will no longer rely on Federation Accounts for daily operations,” Zulum said.

‎The governor revealed that the factory has started fulfilling international orders, with finished goods shipped to Chad and the Republic of Cameroon.

‎Originally constructed under former Governor Kashim Shettima, the factory was revitalized as part of Zulum’s recovery and development plan. To ensure sustainability and commercial viability, the state government transitioned the factory to a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) with Tatabe Global Services, which now oversees production, marketing, and daily operations, while the government provides regulatory oversight and a business-friendly environment.

‎Operating at full capacity, the factory produces a wide range of plastic goods, including chairs, tables, and basins, and has created hundreds of direct jobs for local residents.

‎Governor Zulum was joined by the Speaker of the Borno State House of Assembly, Abdulkarim Lawan, principal officers of the House, and other senior officials during the factory visit.
