Members of the Super Eagles squad and coaching staff have warned that they will not train or travel to Marrakech on Thursday if outstanding bonuses from the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) are not paid.

According to sources close to the team, bonuses for four victories — against Tanzania, Tunisia, Uganda and Mozambique — remain unpaid, despite the team fulfilling their on-pitch obligations. The players are said to be growing increasingly frustrated, with senior figures insisting that the matter must be resolved immediately.

The planned training session and travel arrangements are now in doubt, as the squad awaits assurances from the relevant authorities.

A Familiar Dispute

Bonus-related standoffs are not new in Nigerian football. The Super Eagles have previously been involved in similar disputes at major tournaments, including past AFCON competitions and World Cup campaigns, where delayed payments led to training boycotts, public protests, and last-minute interventions by government officials.

At the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, players famously refused to train over unpaid appearance fees until the issue was resolved, while similar tensions were reported during AFCON tournaments in 2018 and 2021. These recurring issues have often overshadowed Nigeria’s performances and drawn criticism from fans and analysts alike.

Pressure Mounts on Officials

With the Super Eagles currently focused on maintaining momentum in the tournament, many observers fear that off-field distractions could affect morale and performance if the situation drags on. Football stakeholders have urged the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and relevant authorities to act swiftly to prevent an escalation.

As of the time of reporting, no official statement has been issued confirming when the outstanding bonuses will be paid.
