Canadian Court Declares APC, PDP Terrorist Organisations, Soneye, PDP Kick

By Diafa Doubra,
A Canadian federal court has stirred controversy after classifying Nigeria’s two dominant political parties the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as terrorist organisations under its laws. The ruling, which also saw the court deny asylum to a former party member, has sparked sharp reactions from political figures in Nigeria.
PDP Deputy National Youth Leader, Timothy Osadolor, described the verdict as “misguided, biased, and lacking credible evidence,” insisting that such sweeping allegations should be thrown out. He argued that while some individuals within the APC led government may have questions to answer, citing instances of alleged ties to insurgents it was wrong and unfair to label entire political parties as terrorist groups.
Former NNPC spokesperson, Olufemi Soneye, also condemned the court’s decision, warning that it could damage Nigeria’s democratic image and strain diplomatic relations with Canada. He expressed concern that such classifications could be weaponised against political opponents and ordinary citizens abroad, simply because of their party affiliations.
Both men urged Canadian authorities to review the ruling and focus on investigating specific individuals rather than tarnishing the reputation of Nigeria’s main political institutions.
