Niger Delta Human Rights Activist and National President Ijaw Publishers’ Forum, IPF, Comrade Ozobo Austin has called on unemployed youths to harness the power of social media to amplify their issues, create jobs and influence policy, maintaining that certificate qualifications alone can’t guarantee jobs for teeming Nigeria youths.

Ozobo made this remark at the 10th Anniversary Celebration of the Society for the Welfare of Unemployed Youths of Nigeria (SWUYN) in Warri, Delta State on Thursday.

He emphasized that social media has become a crucial tool for mobilization and advocacy, citing examples such as #EndSARS and #FeesMustFall movements. He urged youths to build a professional online presence, network, and develop digital skills to create job opportunities.

The activist also highlighted success stories of Nigerian youths who have leveraged social media to build successful careers and employ others. He, however, noted challenges such as digital illiteracy, internet connectivity, and online harassment, calling for collective action to address these issues.

Ozobo demanded that leaders create jobs, invest in education and skills training, and provide opportunities for economic empowerment. He concluded by expressing gratitude for the participants’ patience and enthusiasm, urging them to take ownership of their futures and create their own opportunities.

The event was themed “Using Media and Social Platforms to Amplify Youth Issues and Influence Policy,” emphasizing the importance of social media in driving change.

“It’s time to shift our mindset and take ownership of our futures. We don’t have to wait for white-collar jobs that may never come; we can create our own opportunities”.

“Let’s face it, politicians in Nigeria often prioritize their own interests and those of their loved ones, rather than creating opportunities for the masses. As graduates, we suffer from joblessness because our education system hasn’t adapted to the changing realities of our society. It’s clear that relying solely on our certificates won’t guarantee employment in today’s Nigeria”.

“So, I urge you to take matters into your own hands. Acquire a skill, be it digital, vocational, or entrepreneurial, and start building your own path. Don’t wait for government handouts or lamentations; create your own opportunities”.
