Court Orders MultiChoice, Peace Mass Transit to Pay Damages for Violating Consumer Rights
By Diafa Doubra,
A Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered MultiChoice Nigeria Limited and Peace Mass Transit to compensate customers over breaches of consumer rights, marking a major victory for consumer protection advocates in the country.
The judgment followed multiple complaints filed by customers against the two companies, alleging unfair treatment and violation of contractual terms. In its ruling, the court held that both firms failed to uphold basic consumer standards as outlined by Nigerian law and ordered them to pay damages to affected individuals.
According to reports, the court found that MultiChoice had imposed questionable subscription policies on its DStv and GOtv customers, while Peace Mass Transit was accused of negligence in service delivery and poor customer care. The judge emphasized that businesses operating in Nigeria must prioritize fairness, transparency, and respect for customer rights.
Consumer advocacy groups have welcomed the verdict, describing it as a “positive step” toward holding powerful companies accountable and restoring public confidence in the justice system.
