CP Oyeniyi Yemi John Assumes Duty as 24th Commissioner of Police in Delta

The Delta State Police Command has announced the assumption of duty of Oyeniyi Yemi John as the 24th Commissioner of Police in the state, succeeding Aina Adesola.
In a press release dated March 27, 2026, the Command stated that the new police boss officially took over leadership, bringing with him decades of operational, administrative, and international policing experience.
Born on March 5, 1969, in Oyun Local Government Area of Kwara State, CP Oyeniyi holds a Bachelor’s degree in Sociology from Ahmadu Bello University and a Master’s degree in Public Order and Information Management from University of Uyo. He also obtained a Diploma in Personnel Management from the Chartered Institute of Personnel Management and a Diploma in Community Policing from the Police Staff College.
CP Oyeniyi was enlisted into the Nigeria Police Force on June 10, 1994, as a Cadet Assistant Superintendent of Police and trained at the Nigeria Police Academy. He began his career in Akwa Ibom State Command in 1996.
Over the years, he has served in various strategic roles across multiple state commands, including Akwa Ibom, Delta, Zamfara, Enugu, and Ogun States. His experience spans investigation, administration, operations, and police training. Notably, he previously served in Delta State between 2000 and 2005 in key investigative roles within the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID).
The new Commissioner also has international exposure, having participated in peacekeeping missions under the African Union Mission in Sudan (AMIS) and the United Nations Mission in Sudan (UNMIS) from 2007 to 2010.
Prior to his posting to Delta State, CP Oyeniyi served as Commissioner of Police and Deputy Head of Interpol National Central Bureau (NCB) in Abuja. His career progression also includes roles such as Assistant Commissioner of Police at the Police College, Oji River, Area Commander in Ogbomosho, and Deputy Commissioner of Police (Administration) in Ondo State.
He has attended several professional courses, including the Strategic Leadership and Command Course at the National Institute of Police Studies, Abuja, and is a member of the institute, as well as an Associate of the Chartered Institute of Personnel Management of Nigeria.
Described as a highly accomplished officer, CP Oyeniyi is known for his discipline, professionalism, and strategic leadership. His expertise covers criminal investigation, anti-fraud operations, conflict management, and capacity development.
Outside official duties, he enjoys listening to music and watching football. He is married with children.
