The Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, has advised Nigerians to acquire basic combat and self-defence skills as insecurity continues to pose serious threats across the country. Musa made the call while addressing journalists in Abuja on Thursday, stressing that citizens should not rely solely on the military and police for protection.

According to him, insecurity has evolved beyond conventional threats, with criminal groups adopting guerrilla style attacks, kidnappings, and banditry that overwhelm communities. He noted that while the armed forces remain committed to safeguarding lives and property, personal preparedness would give citizens an extra layer of protection.

General Musa explained that self-defence training, such as martial arts and basic tactical knowledge, could empower Nigerians to respond better in emergency situations and even deter attackers. He emphasized, however, that this should complement, not replace, the government’s responsibility of ensuring security.

His remarks come at a time when several states are grappling with rising cases of abductions and violent crimes. The Defence Chief’s message has sparked discussions among security experts and civil groups, with some supporting the idea of community-based preparedness, while others argue that the priority should be strengthening state security institutions.
