Delta Activist condemns killing of 16 alleged Fulani Hunters in Edo

By Osaro Michael, Benin
A human right activist, Comrade(Amb.) Derrick Oritsematosan Agberen today condemned in strong terms the brutal murder of sixteen hunters suspected to be killer herdsmen on March 27, in Uromi, Edo State.
According to a statement forwarded to Our Correspondent in Warri,Comrade Agberen said the act by the people who have suffered a lot from herdsmen in times past is,”barbaric”,”pathetic” and “disheartening” to behold.
He added, “it is imperative that the Federal Government of Nigeria pays keen attention to the plights of the people in Edo State, especially travellers and other road users plying the roads that have had traumatic events.”
It would be recalled that the hunters were set ablazed by the people of Uromi Community.
According to him,”Jungle justice is never a viable solution, as it is often the innocent who suffer its consequences.
“Until a law enforcement agency confirms an individual’s culpability following thorough investigative procedures, that person remains a suspect and is presumed innocent until proven guilty.”
He also advised that,”individuals must exercise caution when handling weapons to avoid being perceived as a threat, particularly in light of contemporary challenges.”
Comrade Agberen also appealed that this act by Uromi people should not serve as a mission for revenge by aggrieved Northerners. He said, it should rather be a moment for collective reflection.
“Let us collectively cease these tribal altercations between other regions and the Northern space.
- “While we remain hopeful that the Government restores normalcy in the area, we should all prioritize peace instead of violence, as I wish that this callous occurrence never happens again.”
