Delta CP Holds Strategic Security Briefing, Emphasises Intelligence-Led Policing and Professional Conduct
By Chukwunonso Eric, Warri.
The Delta State Commissioner of Police, Yemi Oyeniyi, has convened a high-level strategic security briefing with Area Commanders, Tactical Commanders, personnel of the State Intelligence Department (SID), and women police officers drawn from the nine Area Commands across the state.
The meeting, held as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen operational efficiency and enhance intelligence gathering, aligns with the policing vision of the Inspector-General of Police, Rilwan Olatunji Disu.
Addressing the officers, CP Oyeniyi stressed the importance of proactive, intelligence-driven policing, noting that effective security management depends on vigilance, coordination, and strong collaboration with the public. He charged personnel to remain committed to their core responsibility of protecting lives and property while upholding professionalism, discipline, and respect for human rights.
The Commissioner underscored that policing is fundamentally a service to the people, adding that the conduct of officers—especially in their interactions with citizens—plays a critical role in building public trust and fostering cooperation.
He issued a stern warning against extortion, unprofessional behaviour, and operational excesses, emphasizing that officers must not become a source of distress to the public. Reaffirming the Command’s zero tolerance for extra-judicial actions, he directed that all suspects be treated in accordance with the law and promptly charged to court where necessary.
On operational strategy, CP Oyeniyi highlighted the need for sustained visibility policing through regular patrols and swift response to incidents, describing active police presence as a key deterrent to crime. He also tasked intelligence personnel with providing timely, credible, and actionable information to support policing operations across the state.
Addressing emerging threats, the police chief identified drug abuse and trafficking as major security concerns, directing that all related operations be intelligence-led, targeted, and well-coordinated. He further instructed the Area Commander in Asaba to develop a strategic approach to tackle rising cases of house-to-house theft within the metropolis.
The Commissioner also engaged women police officers, acknowledging their vital role in shaping public perception of the Force. He encouraged them to continue demonstrating professionalism, empathy, and integrity, particularly in frontline duties such as charge room and front desk operations.
In preparation for the upcoming Easter celebrations, CP Oyeniyi ordered the adequate deployment of personnel to churches and other places of worship to ensure a peaceful and hitch-free festive period. He assured residents that comprehensive security measures have been put in place to safeguard communities across the state.
Reaffirming the Command’s commitment to discipline, accountability, and service excellence, the Commissioner assured the public of sustained efforts toward people-centred and intelligence-driven policing.
The statement was issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, on behalf of the Delta State Police Command.
