The Delta State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of an officer who was caught on video shooting at the vehicle of an unarmed civilian in Asaba, the state capital. The viral footage, which sparked outrage on social media, showed the officer recklessly firing at a moving car, an act the Command has described as “highly unprofessional and unacceptable.”

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Edafe Bright, said the officer has been identified, detained, and is currently facing internal disciplinary proceedings as ordered by the Commissioner of Police, CP Olufemi Abaniwonda. According to the statement, preliminary investigations revealed that the officer was responding to a hit-and-run incident, but the use of his firearm violated Force Order 237, which strictly regulates when and how police personnel can discharge their weapons.

The Commissioner of Police strongly condemned the incident, assuring members of the public that the officer would face the full weight of the law. He reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to upholding professionalism and protecting lives and property across the state. “The Delta State Police Command will not tolerate any act of recklessness from its officers,” the CP stated, pledging that such misconduct will serve as a deterrent to others within the force.
