Delta Police Command Engages NYSC Members on Cybercrime, Citizens’ Rights, and Law Enforcement

By Diafa Doubra,
The Delta State Police Command has taken proactive steps toward strengthening the relationship between the Police and Nigerian youths as it held a comprehensive lecture session with National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members in the state. The session, which took place on Tuesday, October 1, 2025, at the NYSC Orientation Camp, was aimed at reshaping the minds of corps members and equipping them with vital knowledge on security, civic responsibilities, and law enforcement.
The engagement followed the directive of the Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, PhD, NPM, who had earlier mandated all state commands to resume interactive lecture sessions with corps members nationwide. Acting on the order, the Delta State Commissioner of Police, CP Olufemi Abaniwonda, delegated the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Edafe Bright, to represent the command at the event.
During the lecture, SP Bright addressed the corps members on key topics including cybercrime, the role of law enforcement, citizens’ rights and responsibilities, police accountability, and community policing. The session was highly interactive, as corps members eagerly participated, asking thought-provoking questions that received detailed and satisfactory answers.
SP Bright urged the young Nigerians to be exemplary ambassadors of the country, to uphold honesty, discipline, and patriotism in all their endeavors, and to shun every form of criminal activity or violence. He also stressed the importance of understanding and respecting one’s rights and the rights of others, emphasizing that any act capable of taking away their freedom should be avoided at all costs.
Highlighting the responsibilities of citizens as stated in Section 24 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), the police spokesperson reminded the corps members of their civic duties, including respecting the Constitution and its institutions, promoting national unity, showing patriotism, and assisting law enforcement agencies in maintaining peace and order within their communities.
In a bid to strengthen trust and accountability, SP Bright also provided the corps members with official police complaint channels, phone numbers, and other means of reaching the Police in cases of misconduct or abuse by officers.
The lecture ended on a positive note, with many corps members commending the Police Command for its openness and willingness to engage the youth in constructive dialogue.
This initiative by the Delta State Police Command underscores the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to promoting transparency, professionalism, and collaboration with citizens—particularly the youth who play a critical role in shaping the nation’s future.
