Delta State Police Command Marks 70 Years of Women in the Nigeria Police Force with 5km Walkathon Against Gender-based Violence

The Delta State Police Command, under the leadership of the Commissioner of Police, CP Olufemi Abaniwonda, on Tuesday, 2nd December, 2025, joined the nationwide commemoration of 70 Years of Nigerian Women in the Police Force with a symbolic 5km Walkathon held in Asaba to amplify awareness and advocacy against Gender-Based Violence (GBV).

The event, coordinated by senior female officers of the Command, brought together women police personnel from various divisions and units, as well as male allies, partner organisations, and members of the public. Participants marched in solidarity with GBV survivors and in recognition of the historic contributions of women to policing and national security since 1955.

The Commissioner of Police, senior officers reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to advancing gender-responsive policing, improving support systems for survivors, and ensuring the effective prosecution of offenders involved in domestic violence, sexual assault, trafficking, and other gender-based abuses. They noted that the 70-year milestone reflects a proud legacy of resilience, leadership, and service by generations of women who have shaped the Nigeria Police Force through courage, competence, and professionalism.

The CP commended the initiative and praised female officers for their dedication, discipline, and consistent contributions to crime prevention, investigations, community engagement, and victim support across Delta State. He emphasised that combating Gender-Based Violence remains a key priority for the Command, urging residents to speak up, report incidents, and cooperate with law enforcement.

The Command used the occasion to restate its unwavering commitment to safeguarding vulnerable groups and strengthening collaborative efforts with stakeholders to eliminate GBV in all its forms.
