At least eight people were killed Wednesday evening when a bomb exploded inside a mosque at Gamboru Market in Borno State, northeastern Nigeria, during Maghrib prayers, witnesses and local leaders said.

‎The attacker, reportedly a suicide bomber on a tricycle, detonated an explosive device in the crowded mosque. Several worshipers were injured and rushed to nearby hospitals, including the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital and the state hospital, said eyewitness Isa Musa Yusha’u.

‎Malam Umar Abubakar, a member of the mosque committee, confirmed that eight bodies were recovered, though authorities have yet to release official casualty figures. Emergency responders continued searching the area late into the night.

‎No group has claimed responsibility, but analysts and residents said the attack bore the hallmarks of Boko Haram, the Islamist militant group that has waged a decade-long insurgency in northeastern Nigeria.

‎The bombing highlights the ongoing security challenges in Borno State, despite government claims that militant groups have been largely weakened.
