Falana Accuses Donald Trump of Spreading False Claims About Christian Killings in Nigeria
By Micheal Chukwuebuka
Human rights lawyer and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Femi Falana (SAN), has accused former United States President Donald Trump of disseminating false claims regarding alleged killings of Christians in Nigeria.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Wednesday, Falana dismissed Trump’s recent assertion that Christians are facing genocide in Nigeria, describing the statement as misleading and untrue.
He acknowledged that insecurity remains a major concern across the country but warned that portraying the crisis as a religious war is inaccurate and risks fuelling further division.
Falana urged the Nigerian government to treat the controversy as a reminder of its constitutional duty to safeguard citizens and address persistent attacks by armed groups nationwide. He questioned why killings by gunmen continue unabated despite the government’s responsibility to protect lives and property.
Trump had recently alleged that Christianity was under existential threat in Nigeria, claiming that “radical Islamists” were carrying out a “mass slaughter” of Christians. He further stated that the United States would not “stand by” while such atrocities occurred and called on American lawmakers to investigate the matter.
Falana, however, maintained that such remarks misrepresent the reality of Nigeria’s security challenges and called on international leaders to ensure accuracy and restraint in their public statements.
