FCT Police Commissioner Moves Against Extortion Ahead of Independence Day

By Micheal Chukwuebuka
The Commissioner of Police for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), CP Ajao S. Adewale, has warned officers against extortion and other forms of misconduct, urging them instead to intensify intelligence-driven policing as Nigeria prepares to mark Independence Day.
Speaking at a strategic meeting held on Thursday, 25th September 2025, at the Command Headquarters in Abuja, CP Adewale met with Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers and Tactical Commanders to review operations, assess performance, and outline new security priorities for the FCT.
He disclosed that in the month under review, the Command recorded major breakthroughs, including the arrest of 523 suspects during raids, the impoundment of 126 vehicles, the rescue of three kidnapped victims, the neutralization of four kidnappers in separate encounters, and the recovery of six rifles, 48 rounds of ammunition and 13 stolen vehicles.
The Commissioner praised the Anti-Kidnapping Unit for foiling several abduction attempts in Gwagwalada and Karu Area Council, noting that the operations averted what could have become a major security crisis.
He also commended the Scorpion Squad, Rapid Response Squad (RRS), and divisional teams in Kubwa, Life Camp, Galadimawa, Mpape, Nyanya, Durumi, CP MMU-1, and Anti-One-Chance Team ‘B’ for their contributions.
With the ember months, heightened political activities, and Independence Day celebrations drawing near, CP Adewale directed officers to remain firm, fair and professional in their duties.
He warned against unauthorised roadblocks, extortion during enforcement operations, and the use of intoxicants while on duty.
“Community policing remains central to our strategy,” he said, highlighting ongoing engagements with stakeholders such as the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), the Miyetti Allah and other religious leaders.
Reassuring residents of the Command’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property, CP Adewale urged the public to support policing efforts by providing credible information through emergency lines: 08061581938, 08032003913, or the Complaint Response Unit (CRU): 08107314192.
