FG Begins Final Phase of Talks with ASUU to End Prolonged Strike Threat

By Diafa Doubra,
The Federal Government has entered the final phase of negotiations with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) as part of efforts to avert another nationwide strike.
According to reports, the meeting, which began on Wednesday in Abuja, brought together representatives of the Federal Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Labour and Employment, and leaders of ASUU. The discussions focused on the union’s lingering demands, including the implementation of agreements on salary arrears, revitalization funds for public universities, and improved welfare packages for lecturers.
Government officials assured that significant progress had been made in addressing most of ASUU’s concerns, while the union maintained that its patience was running thin over unfulfilled promises.
Sources close to the meeting expressed optimism that the outcome would lead to a lasting resolution, preventing further disruptions to the academic calendar.
This negotiation marks the government’s latest attempt to stabilize Nigeria’s university system and rebuild trust with the academic community.
