By Diafa Doubra,
The Federal Government has released a total of ₦330 billion in cash transfers to vulnerable Nigerians under its ongoing social investment programme.
Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, disclosed this yesterday in Abuja, explaining that the payments were made through the National Social Safety-net Coordinating Office (NASSCO). According to him, the initiative has reached about 19.7 million poor and vulnerable households, translating to more than 70 million individual’s captured in the National Social Register.
Edun said the intervention was designed to cushion the impact of rising living costs and economic reforms on disadvantaged groups. He added that part of the funding was drawn from the $800 million World Bank facility approved earlier to support Nigeria’s safety-net projects.
He stressed that government remained committed to expanding the programme, while also working to improve transparency and ensure that the benefits reach the intended recipients.
