FG, Stakeholders Warn Food Safety Crisis Now a National Security Threat

By Diafa Doubra,
The Federal Government, alongside key stakeholders in the agriculture and health sectors, has raised alarm over what it describes as Nigeria’s growing food safety crisis, warning that it now poses a serious national security threat. Officials say rising cases of contaminated and substandard food products linked to poor handling, weak regulation, and unhygienic processing are endangering public health and undermining economic stability.
At a joint meeting involving the Ministries of Health, Agriculture, and the Institute of Food Science and Technology, experts called for urgent reforms, stricter enforcement of safety standards, and investment in modern food storage and processing facilities. They stressed that without decisive action, the problem could fuel health emergencies, erode consumer confidence, and strain an already fragile healthcare system.
