LAGOS State has once again been thrown into mourning following the death of Mrs Adebimpe Akinola, the Council Manager of Coker Aguda Local Council Development Area (LCDA). Her passing on Monday, 29 September 2025, marks the fifth death of a female local government official in the state within just two months.

According to reports by The Gazelle News, Mrs Akinola, who was also the Chairman of the Forum of Council Managers in Lagos State, died after a brief illness. She was widely regarded as a committed administrator and served as the Head of Administration of Coker Aguda LCDA.

Her death was confirmed in a statement issued by the Forum of Council Managers, which read:

“With total submission to the will of Allah, we announce the passing away of our dear Chairman, Mrs Adebimpe Akinola, this afternoon, Monday, 29th September, 2025. She was the Council Manager of Coker/Aguda LCDA until her death.”

The Forum further announced that she would be buried in accordance with Islamic rites on Tuesday, 30 September 2025. The Janazah Prayer is scheduled to hold at Al Kitab Mosque, Abosede Onamade Street, Eleshin, after Zuhr Prayer at 1:00 p.m., followed by interment at the Equitable CDA Muslim Cemetery, Igbe Lara, at 2:00 p.m.

Mrs Akinola’s death adds to a worrying list of female local government officials in Lagos State who have passed away since the inauguration of the current council administration on 27 July 2025.

On 13 August, Councillor Oluwakemi Rufai of Ward C, Ibeju Lekki Local Government, died just weeks after her swearing-in. Five days later, on 18 August, Councillor Zainab Shotayo of Ward C, Odiolowo-Ojuwoye LCDA, also passed away.

The tragic pattern continued in September with the deaths of Princess Oluremi Nutayi Ajose, Vice Chairman of Badagry West LCDA, on 20 September, and Councillor Basirat Oluwakemi Mayabikan of Ward F, Somolu Local Government, on 21 September.

Mrs Akinola’s passing, so soon after these earlier deaths, has deepened the grief across Lagos councils. Many within the local government system have described the sequence of losses as unprecedented, sparking concern and sorrow among public servants and residents alike.
