Five police officers have been confirmed dead after a deadly exchange of gunfire with armed bandits along the Gusau–Funtua highway in Zamfara State. The confrontation occurred on Thursday when the officers, on a routine patrol, ran into a heavily armed gang suspected to be behind a series of kidnappings and robberies in the area.

According to eyewitnesses, the gunmen ambushed the police team, leading to a prolonged gun duel that lasted for several minutes. Despite putting up strong resistance, the officers were overpowered by the bandits who were said to be numbering in dozens and armed with sophisticated weapons.

Confirming the incident, the Zamfara State Police Command described the loss as “a painful one,” adding that reinforcements have been dispatched to the scene to recover bodies and secure the route. A police spokesperson said tactical units and local vigilantes are now conducting a coordinated operation to track down the fleeing assailants.

Residents of the surrounding communities have since fled their homes for fear of renewed attacks, while commuters have been advised to avoid the Gusau–Funtua axis until normalcy is restored.

The attack adds to the growing wave of insecurity in the North-West region, where armed gangs continue to carry out raids, kidnappings, and killings despite ongoing military operations.
