FORMER FBI Director and outspoken critic of Donald Trump, James Comey, was indicted on Thursday on two criminal charges, as the US President intensified what observers describe as a campaign of retribution against his political opponents.

The charges were filed just days after President Trump publicly urged Attorney General Pam Bondi to take action against Comey and other perceived adversaries — a move widely condemned as a departure from the longstanding principle that the Justice Department must operate independently of the White House.

Comey faces charges of making false statements and obstruction of justice in connection with his role in investigating Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election and possible collusion with the Trump campaign.

President Trump celebrated the indictment, describing Comey as “one of the worst human beings this country has ever been exposed to.”

Throughout his second term, Trump has pursued an aggressive campaign against both real and perceived opponents, but the charges against Comey mark the most striking escalation to date.

According to federal prosecutor Lindsey Halligan, who was appointed by President Trump earlier this week, Comey could face up to five years in prison if convicted. Halligan, a former personal lawyer to the president, has no prior prosecutorial experience.
